Butterfly Has Perfect Timing!

God has a way of making sure a message hits home and will not soon be forgotten.  This happened to me once with a butterfly.  We were attending one of the God Speed Ministry church services, during the IHRA World Finals at Rockingham Dragway, on a chilly October morning.  After I finished singing, I went and sat on the back row next to my sister-in-law, Lisa.  Renee Bingham, the chaplain, began a message on God’s transforming power.

She used the illustration of a caterpillar being changed into a butterfly.  She said when we are lost in sin we are like that caterpillar, a lowly worm crawling around in the dirt.  But when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior an amazing transformation begins.  We are wrapped in a cocoon of God’s love and mercy.  Though we can’t see the outcome or understand what is happening to us, he is molding, shaping, and changing us.  He is creating something new and unique!  When released, He gives us wings to fly!

Now, while she was making this comparison, a movement caught the corner of my eye.  I looked up and there, dancing across the middle of our congregation, was a beautiful orange butterfly!  All I could do was elbow Lisa and point.  We both couldn’t help but smile.

A little later that morning Renee’s husband, Gary, was at the start line.  He had just done his burnout and was preparing to stage.  You may not believe this, but that same butterfly went fluttering across the start line at that very moment!  At least, it looked like the same one.  And it was the only one we saw all weekend.  I guess God just wanted to make sure we got the message.  Oh, by the way, Gary won that particular run.
