“Bear” Necessities For our 25th anniversary, we decided to take a two week road trip. One of our destinations was Dayton Ohio. Alan wanted to go see the Air Force Museum, so we spent two nights at the KOA campground there. This KOA had these things called Banana Bikes. They look like overgrown Big Wheels! Our last night there, we were sitting at the picnic table enjoying the quiet. There was a family of four riding these bikes around the campground. Several times they came zipping past our site. We could hear them coming and would look to see if the little one was going to make it up the hill. Somewhere along the way, they changed directions. They were coming from behind us. As they came around the curve, the dad and oldest daughter bumped wheels. When she steered away from him, her bike flipped, sending her tumbling into grass and rocks, with the bike landing on top of her. Alan and I ran to see if she was okay. He got to her first, made sure it wasn’t serious and helped her up. Her family came rushing over. They brushed her off, thanked us for our help and took her back to their campsite to get her cleaned up and looked at. We went back to our site and didn’t think much of it. Although, we did wonder if she was indeed okay. The next morning we were getting ready to head out. Alan started to go outside to start unhooking things. When he opened the door, he stopped and called me over. I looked around him and couldn’t believe my eyes. Sitting on the picnic table was a cute little teddy bear and a thank you card. We were speechless!
I think sometimes as Christians we make things harder than they ought to be. We think sharing Jesus with others is too expensive, too time consuming, requires more time and effort than were able to give. But the truth is; it’s really very easy. There are lost, hurting, discouraged and downtrodden
people all around us. There are battle weary Christians, feeling beaten and
alone, in dire need of encouragement. All they may need is for you to “come” as
she said, to be there for them. That alone may be enough. Our little bear has joined our other traveling companions, Winnie and Rottie. We call him Dayton so we will always be reminded that sometimes it’s the simplest things that touch a heart the most. |
